El Salvador, long a fervently Catholic country, is in revival. In recent decades, Evangelical churches, mostly Pentecostal, have grown to absorb about a third of the country's population. Seven days a week, walking through rural villages or urban barrios, one can hear the sound of booming microphones, clapping hands, and strained voices, spilling out of open doorways into quiet streets.
